What's new: Android, Google Play, aluminum
Every Alexa Tablet runs Android with the full Google Play Store — YouTube, Netflix, Gmail, Google Docs, and more — alongside built-in Amazon apps such as Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Quick, and Amazon Luna. That is a clean break from Fire OS and Amazon's own app store on older Fire tablets.
Hardware is aluminum unibody across the lineup. Amazon says Alexa+ is built into the core experience: a personalized home screen and Dynamic Tab, voice or "Ask Alexa" access, optional On-Screen Intelligence (off by default), and hands-free live sessions. Opening the Kindle app turns the tablet into a distraction-free reading sanctuary with notifications silenced, reduced blue light, and up to about 20 hours of reading on a charge (slightly less on the smaller models, per WIRED's specs table).

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro specs
The 12 Pro is Amazon's flagship: about 6.5 mm thin, 12-inch 2800×1840 (280 ppi) LCD at 120 Hz with a 3:2 aspect ratio, MediaTek Dimensity 8400 4 nm 8-core chip, 8GB RAM on the standard model (Nanomatte configs go up to 16GB), 128GB base storage (256GB on some Nanomatte SKUs), quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, USB-C with DisplayPort and USB 3.2 Gen 1, IP52, up to 16 hours of video playback, and about 550 g. Front camera 8 MP; rear 13 MP. Color: Graphite.
Nanomatte is the optional anti-glare display Amazon developed with Corning using a photolithography etch rather than a sandblasted matte finish. Amazon and WIRED both put Nanomatte from $549.99. Amazon claims nearly 3× processing and 9× graphics versus any tablet it has shipped before.

Alexa Tablet 11 and Tablet 8 specs
Tablet 11: 11-inch 2560×1600 (276 ppi) at 90 Hz, 16:10, MediaTek Dimensity 8189 8-core with 8GB RAM, 64GB or 128GB storage, dual Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6, up to 15 hours of video, about 466 g, 8 MP front and rear cameras. Colors: Graphite, Amethyst, Matcha.
Tablet 8: 8.7-inch 1340×800 (180 ppi) at 60 Hz, MediaTek Dimensity 8189 with 4GB or 8GB RAM, 64GB or 128GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, up to 14 hours of video, about 329 g and 7.95 mm thin per Amazon's newsroom, dual speakers, 5 MP front / 8 MP rear. Colors: Graphite, Rosette, Teal. Amazon positions it as the most portable model for reading, browsing, and streaming on the go.
Pro Keyboard, Pro Pen, and accessories
Exclusive to the 12 Pro, the Pro Keyboard ($149.99) magnetically attaches with no Bluetooth pairing and adds a trackpad for multi-window work. The Pro Pen ($89.99) is a USI 2.0 active stylus with 4,096 pressure levels, tilt, magnetic docking, and wireless charging. Amazon says the Nanomatte glass adds paper-like friction for writing. Folio covers and a 35W dual USB-C adapter are sold separately.

Amazon Kids Tablets
Kids bundles cover 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes with a kid-proof case and one year of Amazon Kids+. Pre-K (ages 3+) gets soft bumper cases in franchises such as Paw Patrol and Barbie; ages 6+ get a slim hard case with kickstand. Kids+ adds tools like Storybuilder, and Amazon redesigned the Parent Dashboard for weekly insights. WIRED notes kids editions are priced in line with the matching adult models and include a one-year worry-free guarantee. Amazon.com also lists a Kids Tablet 8 (ages 3–5) bundle from $229.99. Ship dates match the adult tablets in North America, plus Japan on October 14 for Kids.
Fire tablets: no longer manufactured
CNBC and WIRED both report that Amazon is ending the Fire tablet line. Amazon is no longer manufacturing new Fire units; CNBC says support continues for about four years after the final shipment, and WIRED adds Amazon expects to stop shipping Fire tablets within about one to two months of the October 8 announce, with the same four-year support window. Existing Fire devices keep working as they do today. Fire HD 8 models are still visible for sale on Amazon.com alongside the new Alexa Tablet 8 while inventory lasts.
WIRED also reports Amazon is committing to at least four years of software updates on the new Alexa tablets, launching on Android 16 with Android 17 expected early in 2027.
Alexa+ and privacy on the tablets
Alexa+ is free with the tablet for a focused on-device experience. Amazon says full Alexa+ on other Echo and Alexa devices still needs Prime or an Alexa+ subscription. On-Screen Intelligence is opt-in with a visible indicator when Alexa can see the screen. TechCrunch notes Amazon told it these are an all-new product line with new hardware and OS, not a Fire rebrand.
Bottom line
Ship day is here: Alexa Tablet 8 from $229.99, 11 from $329.99, and 12 Pro from $499.99 ($549.99 Nanomatte), with Google Play, Alexa+, and Kindle sanctuary mode as the headline software story — and Fire manufacturing ending. EU shipping follows on October 19. Prices and stock above were live-checked on Amazon.com around 13:38–13:40 UTC on October 14, 2026; confirm the config you want before you buy.
